Aloud in the cloud
Posted on | January 7, 2009 |
Things are slowly happening with our cloud-based iTunes clone. Since the launch one month ago we received not only quite some visitors to the site but also a bit of traction on our open code repository at github. This makes us really happy because it means that people actually find our code interesting. The repo currently has over fifty followers and around five forks so there is chance for future user contributions. One such hack that is already in place is the feature to use the browsers buttons to go back and forth in search history, all thanks to Jörn!
Before new years we also got a mail from Feliks Eyser who is running a download store in Germany called Justsloud. He told us that they had taken our source code, adapted it to fit in to their system and that they are now using it as a player for their customers. Whenever someone buys a track It gets added to their player from where they can listen to the track instantly. They have also added a download button if the byuer want to stick it on his ex. iPod. Extremely cool, here’s a screenshot of how it looks:
As you can see all the changes are tastefully made and the overall implementation works really well. For me this would be the perfect combination of a cloud-based player where I can have all my tracks but opt-in to download those I really want on my iPhone or iPod. I think I would actually delete the tracks I downloaded after the transfer was done just to not have to carry around a lot of uncessecary bits. I hope we will see more of these projects in the future. And if you are a download store, please take our code, I promise you that It’s a good start.
Oh yeah, and happy 2009 everyone!
