How to fail with a UI

Posted on | October 11, 2009 |

Things like these makes me so frustrated. This is how the Tele2 (a big Swedish ISP) mobile broadband client works when you try to log in, watch and (don’t) learn:

verify-pin

Looks ok right? No, notice which of the buttons that has default focus and thereby the action of the return key. As if canceling would be the primary goal of this screen, probably not. So, most of the times I accidentally hit return and then I get thrown this screen:

tele2-mobile-partner

Here they switched the default action to “No, i don’t want to quit.” Well, makes sense for a big evil corporation but with the last unexpected action in mind I now react and hit the Esc key (normally abort what i’m about to do) since I don’t want to quit, but what happens? It quits and I have to start all over again. This happens to me too often and the reason I don’t learn is that the behavior is totally opposite all other software on my mac.

Congratulations Tele2 on turning an easy action into something incredibly annoying.

    Hi,
This issue is found in earlier versions in the OOTB connection manager from Huwaei. To solve this you can either upgrade your modem to a more recent sw version or use Tele2’s alternative client, Tele2 Connect, which also gives you access to wifi hotspots (subscription dependent).

The issue with wrong focus is fixed in both.

The modem/carrier/OSX situation is just a big fucking mess; the hardware manufacturers together with the carriers have failed in every aspect there is. I actually called Telia AND Telenor a month prior to the release of Snow Leopard to inform them of the upcoming version of Apple’s operating system (since they failed to provide me with a modem that worked under the Snow Leopard beta). Did I get some help? No. Did they listen to my input? No…

I’d say scrap every piece of OS X modem software (incl. drivers) that’s been written to date, and do it from it scratch. This time right (e.g. write GOOD drivers and let Apple’s frameworks that are in place already handle the rest - like connecting to a carrier, sending/receiving data…).
