Music Hack Day Stockholm this weekend

The Stockholm episode of Music Hack Day is closing in fast. We are expecting around 90 hackers to spend over 24 hours at the Doberman HQ building the future of music. You will be able to f ollow pictures, tweets and live casts via the site.

A great week for public service

The past week has been great, especially for public service in Sweden. Three somewhat unrelated events happened that, imho, strengthens the position of Swedish public service.

1. Swedish Television (SVT) released a mobile version of their awesome on demand service SVT Play. It includes support for all the major platforms such as Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile and is, of course, completely free. A long with the browser version SVT also announced their iPhone app for Play which was built by a team from Doberman that includes yours truly

2. Swedish Radio (SR) released an much anticipated update of their iPhone application. It now features live radio as well as on demand shows from their archives. Their broadcasts are extremely good, free of ads and free to listen to.

3. SR also decided to join the hacker conference Music Hack Day that me and Mattias Arrelid from Spotify are organizing in Stockholm early next year. This is probably the coolest thing of the three. They have decided to not only join but also release a new API before the event. The API includes access to track listings, program listings and more. And as mentioned, they have an extremely valuable archive so hopefully this spawns a range of new and interesting mashups and web services.

Needless to say, Swedish public service organizations are stepping up their game and making our money worth. Kudos!

Finally, the best hack event out there is coming to Stockholm. The weekend of the 30-31:st of January next year hackers and music nerds meet for two days of code & fun. The venue is the web agency Dobermans office in an old brewery on Södermalm.

Jyri & Tariq on Jolicloud

One of the more interesting software projects right now is Tariq Krim’s Jolicloud. I mentioned it shortly a while back when my project The Cloud Player was spotted in a demo. The development seem to be coming along well and I hope that their beta program will be extended to more people soon. I believe in the power of Netbooks and think they have a bright future if operating systems like Jolicloud become popular.

Independent: The 25 best music websites

A few weeks ago The Independent, one of the major newspapers in the UK, ran an article on the 25 best music sites on the web. And guess if we were honored to be on it with CitySounds.fm. Quite good for a project that was first created during 15 hours, don’t you think?

Right now i’m watching Eric & SpeedyJ discussing the future of music and technology. Later today there will be presentations by some of the more interesting companies in this space. Looking forward to an interesting afternoon!

How to fail with a UI

Things like these makes me so frustrated. This is how the Tele2 (a big Swedish ISP) mobile broadband client works when you try to log in, watch and (don’t) learn:

Looks ok right? No, notice which of the buttons that has default focus and thereby the action of the return key. As if canceling would be the primary goal of this screen, probably not. So, most of the times I accidentally hit return and then I get thrown this screen:

Here they switched the default action to “No, i don’t want to quit.” Well, makes sense for a big evil corporation but with the last unexpected action in mind I now react and hit the Esc key (normally abort what i’m about to do) since I don’t want to quit, but what happens? It quits and I have to start all over again. This happens to me too often and the reason I don’t learn is that the behavior is totally opposite all other software on my mac.

Congratulations Tele2 on turning an easy action into something incredibly annoying.
